Cambridge dons attack ID cards. Oxbridge accepts new diploma.
Cambridge academics and community leaders have banded together to attack the new ID cards for non-EU students. The Home Secretary Jacqui Smith believes that it will allow people to easily and securely prove their identity. Student Kasim Khorasanee disagrees:
"I believe that recent history has shown that the government is liable to failures in these enterprises now I believe that it is discriminatory and if implemented, sets the international students aside from the EU students."
Oxford and Cambridge universities are to accept a Diploma qualification in their admissions. The engineering diploma will be accepted for engineering degrees beginning in 2010. Although applicants will also need to have a physics A-level, this will be seen as progressive step for Diplomas.
A think-tank is calling for the scrapping of limits on university fees. The plans put forward are intended to give individuals more consumer choice. However Charlotte Richer, CUSU Access Officer disagrees:
"I think that placing too much emphasis on the idea of the financial return from the degree can be damaging to students particularly those from backgrounds that are unfamiliar with certain courses."
