The Cambridge local music scene is a
goldmine for upcoming talent if only one cares to take a bit of a
closer look – this page is a brief introduction to just a few of
the bands from our live circuits. This list is far from complete and
I highly encourage you to head out to one of the town's local venues to do a
bit of discovering for yourself.
If you're in a band or know a band that
should be featured here, drop us a line at music [at] cur1350 [dot]

--- VENUES
The JunctionThe biggest venue Cambridge has to offer, housing big-named bands, DJs and comedians. HIghlights this term include Black Kids, Roots Manuva and Fleet Foxes. Cambridge Corn ExchangeSimilar to the Junction in its variety and size of events, although more central. Look out for Hot Chip, Elbow and Goldfrapp this term The Portland Arms A much more intimate experience: capacity of 100 punters and smaller, often local bands. Good for spotting the Next Big Thing...Esser, Fuzzy Lights and Thomas Tantrum are all playing there over the next few months. The Man on the MoonSimilar to The Portland Arms in that it is a pub-venue, supporting local bands...good stuff. Fez ClubUnderground, hot and sweaty venue for DJs big and small, get there early if you want to beat the queues: Scratch Perverts, HedKandi and the Mystery Jets all played sets there last year, and Hot Chip will be DJing after their set at the Corn Exchange in October.

Dead
Letter Society: These
four guys have a knack for well-rounded songwriting of the polished
rock type. With their accessible but intelligent sound, they could
well be the next big thing. Their first full-length album, Ideas and
Diagrams, was self-released in March.
---
the
October Game: A
4-piece from Bedfordshire who manage to weave delicate intricacies
together into stunning soundscapes. Their debut album, Box of a
Billion Lights, features mainstream friendly indie rock tracks
alongside expansive nine-minute masterpieces.

Combine
six people with more instruments than anyone (even they) can count,
sprinkle a bit of chaos and a lot of fun on top, mix well, bake for a
short time and voilà: playful folk-y tunes bursting with
energy.

My Passion: 3
parts disco and 2 parts punk tied together with 80's synth lines,
fixed with plenty of hairspray. These Hitchin boys know how to
cultivate a controversial image, from their emo style to their
myspace base-of-operations – however, when it sounds as good as
this, who's hating? They have several singles out on their own label,
Style.Suicide.Records., and are relentlessly touring around the
country in search of new blood. Photo: Shona [shpwnedphotography] --- The Resistance: Their
music: it's electronic, it's psychedelic, it's tense, it's
anxiety-inducing, it's peaceful, it's endless, it's expansive, it's
tight, it's meandering, it hits all the right buttons and causes all
the right lights to go on: the dials are going crazy but we're headed
dreamily into space.

The
Tupolev Ghost: Post-hardcore
that will bust out your eardrums before tearing your brain apart but
by then you'll be so tangled up in their web of sounds that you won't
care. This Cambridge 4-piece have released two EPs – 2006's
self-release Take Courage and 2008's The Alpha EP through Disjuncture
Records.
---
Fuzzy
Lights: Guitars,
strings and samples poured together into cascades of experimental folk sound that
manage to be simultaneously sweet and haunting, like having the sea
tug at your heartstrings. Their first full-length, A Distant
Voice, is recorded and awaiting release.
---
Hamfatter: Smile-inducing
indie-pop 'thrown' together using everything from conventional to
eclectic instrumentation (strings! horns!) that will bounce around
your head for days. Full length What Part Of Hamfatter Do You Not
Understand is out through Pink Hedgehog Records; new EP Do Something
Stupid Tonight is scheduled for a summer release.
--- Wave67: Tense
and dark electronic rock from a Cambridge 3-piece that does
everything from channeling Joy Division into the presence to packing
a punch like Primal Scream. Currently unsigned.
--- This
Is My Honesty: Straightforward
pop-punk out of Cambridge – they're not trying to do anything new,
instead doing something old well. They currently have two EPs out:
Make The Most Of Now, and follow-up Heritage.
